Often, people are surprised that our Sioux Falls chiropractors evaluate and work on feet. The feet are an important aspect of the body and problematic feet can affect the knees, hips or even the back. This may make it hard to walk, exercise and even affect the ability to lift or perform work activities. The foot has 3 arches (medial, anterior transverse, and lateral longitudinal) that are formed by the bones and ligaments of the foot. Problems with the three arches of the foot are common, especially if they are too high or too low. Sometime a patient may struggle with their arches from a young age, but other people may develop problems if their arches flatten out as they age. Chiropractic adjustments and wearing good shoes can often help foot issues but sometimes a patient may need more support in their shoes. Orthotics, or shoe inserts, are one way to get increased support for your arches.
What are Custom Orthotics?
Orthotics can be purchased over the counter or they can be custom made for your exact foot. Over the counter orthotics may be able to help some patients get the support that they need. Over the counter orthotics are cheaper than custom orthotics and are often able to be purchased in many stores that have a pharmacy or health section. I often recommend that patients first try an over the counter orthotic due to the lower cost. If that doesn’t help, then I recommend looking at getting a custom orthotic made.
How are Orthotics Customized?
Our chiropractors use Foot Levelers brand orthotics for our patients. Foot Levelers offers different styles of orthotics depending on what shoes you plan to use them in. They have different sized orthotics to fit into boots, athletic shoes or even dress shoes (men or women’s) They even offer the option to get a custom-made sandal that has an orthotic foot bed. Custom orthotics are made by taking either a scan or a mold of the foot. This information is then used to create a custom orthotic individualized to that person based on the anatomy of their foot. Once we send off the mold of the foot it usually takes about 2 weeks to receive the completed orthotic. The orthotic then replaces the removable insert in your shoe. Initially, you only should wear the orthotics for an hour a day and then gradually increase the time you are using them until you use them any time you are wearing shoes. For most people a custom orthotic will have a lifespan of 1-2 years and then it should be replaced.
Do I Need Custom Orthotics?
Not all patients require custom orthotics. Often good shoes and some chiropractic care may be able to help your symptoms. If you are having foot problems or if you think you may benefit from custom orthotics, please contact our office to schedule an appointment. One of our chiropractors would be happy to meet with you and discuss your case. After performing an evaluation, they will be able to tell you what recommendations they think could help you with your foot, knee or back pain.
